Dusty Milligan, like most boys his age, is always ready for an adventure, especially around Christmas break. The area around his family's farm (the holler) is the setting for these fun-filled and thoughtful stories. Dusty, his sister Lucy, his friend Ned, and many other interesting characters find themselves in challenging situations and learn some important lessons.
Join Dusty as he babysits a family of goats, camps in the snow, loses his way on a long hike, learns how to respond when everything goes wrong, and helps an elderly shut-in find Christmas cheer. These and other stories are written in a humorous and touching style that will keep families entertained and reflecting on special Christmas memories.
Bring Dusty and his adventures home with our discussion guide. It's free to download, and it highlights the messages found throughout the chapters.
Though Dr. Gear lived/created all of Dusty's adventures, he really wanted to involve the other members of his family, especially his grandchildren. So he asked them a favor: to make drawings from the various stories.
Below are the illustrations that the grandchildren created (and Dr. Gear insisted) were part of the final book.
Carey Gear is a family physician living in Alaska. He graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine. Growing up in West Virginia and rural Indiana provided a rich background to draw on for writing. Dr. Gear has two married daughters and eight grandchildren. He has been married to his wife, Kim, for forty-three years. They enjoy travel, entertaining, and spending time with their family.
